Audrey și Ella (I)

  • Da, enorm! a răspuns Audrey, ușor intimidată că o străină i-a ghicit secretul.

Marcia Reynolds: “The courage that emanates from your presence will help others override their fears.”

Throughout our life we meet a myriad of people. We collect moments of togetherness, we share ideas, emotions, lessons. I believe we meet the right people the moment we are ready to benefit most from that connection. Call it serendipity, synchronicity––yet not an accident.

In February 2021, while attending an ICF Romania webinar, I met a remarkable woman: Coach and bestselling author Marcia Reynolds. At the time, I did not know who she was despite her impactful work. Her bright presence captivated me during the online event, so immediately afterwards I began my research to find out more about her.

And here we are in July 2021! After reading about Marcia and her work and listening to several podcasts and interviews, I was inspired to send her a copy of my first book. I dreamt of having the opportunity to do a short interview with her, so I sent her a LinkedIn message with my request. To my surprise, not only did she immediately reply “YES,” she also suggested we do a Zoom call. Here are some of Marcia’s precious insights.

Three defining moments that made you the Person You Are Today

• There are many and it is hard to choose just three. In all my books, I share that when I turned 20, I was in jail. I thought my life was over. And I met this woman that told me: “Are you crazy? You are young, smart, strong…” And that I have privileges that many people do not have … She helped me to claim who I was and what I could do. And because of that I really wanted to dedicate my life to helping others in the way she did for me. So, that’s why I like supporting coaches and people wanting to make a difference.

• Another defining moment was my master’s degree in adult learning, which made me realize how we learn and what really changes our behaviors. I was always trying to improve my training programs. People enjoyed the experience, but they did not necessarily change their behavior after the programs were over. The degree triggered my ongoing curiosity to discover how people learn and are inspired to change their minds and grow.
My ongoing thirst for understanding learning led met to discover the power of coaching.

• This triggered the third defining moment: when I found coaching––in 1995––and started researching the difference that coaching makes in the brain and why it is so powerful. I was inspired to earn my doctoral degree so I could study the neuroscience of learning. I found that when we tell people what to do and or only focus on problem-solving, only the working brain is activated, which uses only short-term memory and not reflective learning, Coaching activates a different part of the brain where long-term, learning memory is. We not only learn and adapt our behavior, we feel more confidence to move forward, which was what that woman in jail did for me when I was 20.

If you could speak to Marcia when she was 5 years old, what would you like to tell her?

Always speak your mind. It took me a while to have that confidence, but I did it and I chose my own path.

About Courage

Courage is acting in the face of fear; courage does not make fear go away, courage is

‘I recognize my fears and I am going to move forward anyway’. If you don’t have fears, you don’t have courage. You might have confidence. Maybe you feel bold, but it is not courage. So, as a coach or a teacher, the energy I bring to the conversation can inspire courage – I set the emotional tone of the interaction. The brain senses the emotions of the socially dominant person in the room (the leader, coach, or teacher) –– so the emotions I’m feeling are what you’re going to sense. And joy, courage, care gratitude, are very contagious … So, my courage should uplift your courage as well.

Resources you use to Recharge

• I have had an extremely clean diet, no sugars or grains, for decades and I exercise every day. For example, this morning I went for a 3-mile walk, then I spent time in the gym doing strength training. Hence, I’m very healthy and I am doing my passion, so it does not feel like a burden, even now that I’m in my 60’s! I know I can work with a lot of energy for many years to come.

• I also like to write; it energizes me.

Recommendations for this Challenging Period

• Self-care is critical, to get enough sleep, to have positive people in your life––if you are not positive, you are not in my life … I get out in nature often, I hike, I appreciate where I live, I enjoy being outside with my feet on the ground, feeling the earth.

• We all have to find what we’re called to do, and we can find that calling no matter what… If you are stuck in bad energy because you do not like what you’re doing that’s not healthy.

Coaching in the future years

Because I’ve worked for technology companies for 11 years, I saw the shift into smart technologies many years ago, early in my career. Yet I do not know how they will perfect human interaction with Artificial Intelligence, so I can’t predict that. So much of my effectiveness as a coach is the energy between us, the presence that I bring that helps you feel safe with me. Will Artificial Intelligence ever be capable enough to replicate that? I am not so sure, not now anyway, but who knows what the creative, human mind can create in the future?

About being Real, Authentic, Vulnerable

  • When we go through rough times in our lives, we learn who we are and the importance of being who we are, the importance of being real. This gives us creative power.
  • Vulnerability wraps into Authenticity: ‘I am sharing with you who I am and what I think, and why I see the world that way. I’m also interested in how you see the world. Maybe then, we can see new possibilities together.’

Interesting facts about Marcia

  • Green is her defining color because it represents Nature.
  • She loves the desert (she’s lived in Arizona since birth). She thinks there is magic in the desert.
  • She has Romanian ancestry; her grandfather was born in Transylvania.

You can learn more about Marcia and her work by reading her inspiring books (, joining her newsletter and following her on social media. As for me, I’ve released into the universe my wish of meeting Marcia offline, either in Romania or in the USA.

Shine Your Light!

… He didn’t need anything more but a long road to take him forward and forward, until he reached his goal, and he could’ve reached his goal any day, at any hour. He always carried his hope in his heart.” (Queen Marie of Romania, The dreamer of dreams)

I enjoy interacting with authentic, vibrant, courageous people. I love the si(e)nergy created during these encounters. Roxana and Nicholas Lupu (Arttis Academy) offered me the opportunity to co-create a memory of a lifetime. This happened last year on February 7th when I interviewed the lovely couple at BiziLive TV. That episode had more than 35000 views, hence I decided that an abbreviated English transcript would be helpful for a broader audience.

Let’s start!

“GB: Both of you have already used the word COURAGE – the seed of our dialogue tonight.  Nassim Taleb stated in his book – Skin in the game – that the only virtue that cannot be simulated is Courage. What do you think?

RL: Yes, it’s truly a virtue which cannot be simulated because is so interconnected with vulnerability. What Brene Brown was also saying: the moment you accept your Vulnerability that’s when you access your inner resources, those of the heart and you become courageous. And courage is not possible in the absence of the vulnerability. When you have a great vulnerability, that’s when you also have a great courage. And, in fact, through this courage you inspire people and you become, one way or another, a hero. And that’s why we are so fascinated and promote this idea of courage. Every day, we learn the power of courage.

NL: As Roxana said the moment you accept your vulnerability, you gain strength. That’s why we used these words in our workshops – Courage and Power in public speaking, Courage and Power in communication.

GB: You two are very courageous.

RL: We’re trying.

GB: The step you took by going to London and begun something new there, shows courage. How did you decide to do this?

RL: At first, we started the whole Arttis Academy concept in London, being asked to run workshops for speaking, negotiation, communication at a corporate level. Then we wanted, somehow, to extend what we learned there, what we assimilated and the life experiences, and we decided to extend to a broader audience. And, somehow, we made this bridge between London and Bucharest, so now we’re running similar workshops here. There is a need for this interconnectivity, and the best is not to limit ourselves to one place and one mentality.

GB: How do people feel during your workshops? To reveal your vulnerabilities, in public, is a difficult thing, to say the least.

NL: Very difficult and what happened in one of our workshops (on 14th December 2019) amazed us. Some things happened beyond what I would have expected because, of course, the moment you talk about public speaking it’s a wide area of discussion… And we talked a lot about vulnerability, courage, strength.

RL: During our classes, we let people to discover their own process. In fact, we gave them a space where they didn’t feel judged, where they are accepted. And I think that’s what each of us needs: a space where to experiment and even make mistakes.

GB: You are saying it is necessary to offer space to each person and this is creating the opportunity for each individual to leave their personal mark. In an interview you gave some time ago, you declared: ‘as a human being you have to keep your originality by providing a personal touch to everything you do.’

RL: Yeah… I think that, actually, it’s the hardest thing, because nowadays we are bombarded by social media and the desire to conform or to imitate. We no longer realise who we are, where we are going to… And that’s why, I find it one of the hardest things these days, to imprint your DNA. Of course, there is also the fear of being judged and the fear of going out of what is socially acceptable, whether we are in Romania, in the UK or elsewhere. It is, in fact, an act of courage, in one form or another!

GB:  And if we think that the word COURAGE has its origin in the Latin COR which means heart…

RL: Yes, indeed!

GB: And the last question, which is actually a kind request for each of you: please share with us a thought for the days to come, a hint, an emotion.

RL: Personally, I believe that we need more than ever to believe and to be grateful for every day of our lives, and to smile more often.

NL: Ah, that’s exactly what I was thinking about!

For me, one of the things I learned — a bit hard, unfortunately — is to do everything I can and be grateful for everything that comes back to me and everything I have. And, without copying Roxana… Again, maybe, I discovered the power of smiling too late. To smile, for real, with no masks.

Many times, while in London I found myself in difficult situations, and I realised the truth in John Maxwell’s statement: ‘force yourself to smile even if you don’t have why’. And even it seemed crazy to me, walking on streets of London — during a difficult time when a lot of new things were testing my patience – I stopped and I said to myself: ‘OK, this weather, the poor-quality coffee… OK, I need to smile.’ And I forced myself to smile, and I felt better. And I realized this incredible power: we need to smile, we need to be grateful… because most of the time, we have no idea what how lucky we are!

GB: True! I subscribe to these ideas. Thanks a lot, Roxana and Nicholas!

NL&RL: We thank you!”

Thank you so much for reading this week’s blog post!

N.Y.C. – Nurture Your Courage

Courage. What makes a King out of a slave? Courage.

What makes the flag on the mast to wave? Courage.

What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist or the dusky dusk?

What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage.

What makes the Sphinx the 7th Wonder? Courage.

What makes the dawn come up like THUNDER?! Courage

The Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz

  • Are we born with a certain amount of courage?
  • Can we self-create courage? If yes, how? How long will it last?
  • If you feel fear, does it mean you aren’t courageous?

Change almost always causes discomfort. It pushes us, it generates fears, anxiety, even panic. For more than one year we’ve witnessed tremendous, unplanned changes.

I believe this period has created a great opportunity to ignite our courage and resilience. It would be extremely beneficial to ask ourselves:

  • On a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high), how Courageous was I feeling in March 2020?
  • Using the same scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high), what is my level of Courage NOW?

Oftentimes, the blessing of a difficult life period comes in the form of Courage.

In the last three years, while sharing my transformation journey, I’ve been asked what I’ve gained throughout it. The answer is simple: Courage. And once I received this gift, I am doing my best to nurture it, day by day.

Too many times, people think you are either born courageous or you’re not.

Of course, nature plays a role in determining who has or hasn’t courage. Research in neuroscience shows that some people have a “Type T” personality. These individuals may have fewer dopamine receptors in their brains to record sensations of pleasure and satisfaction — and as such, may require higher levels of stimulant and endorphin activity in order to feel good. Their higher level of testosterone, a hormone that seems to correlate with uninhibited behavior, may also lead to a more risk-oriented lifestyle.

Manfred F.R. Kets de Vries, psychotherapist and Professor of leadership development and organizational change at INSEAD shares a handful of techniques we can use to find and practice our courage:

  • Create scenarios: imagine both the worst that could happen if we take a given action and what the outcome would be if we didn’t act. By identifying the risks we are taking, we can build immunity to our fears. It’s important to recognize that fear is not a bad thing. Look at it as an opportunity to learn more about who you are and why you might be afraid.
  • Talk out the fear beneath – If you take the time to voice your fears and understand why they are there, you will become braver. It is not easy to acknowledge where and when you are vulnerable. So, if you’re able to face those fears you’re one step closer to being courageous.
  • Practice stepping out of your comfort zone – Consciously and consistently practicing small acts of courage can have a cumulative effect.
  • Take care of your body: Fear is both physically and mentally draining. In a crisis, make sure you take the time to eat well, exercise and sleep. Using various relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga creates the clarity of mind required for courageous action.
  • Having people with whom you can freely share your fears can be a valuable resource when you are faced with a challenge to your courage.

In the last 365 days, did you learn something new about your level of courage? If yes, please take a moment and describe that “thing”, using written words or a drawing.

My gift for you at the end of this short article includes:

  1.  A movie about a courageous boy:
  2. A book about courage:
  3. Roxana Lupu’s words about courage: “Yes, it’s truly a virtue which cannot be simulated because it has to do, in the first place with vulnerability. Courage is not possible in the absence of vulnerability. When you’ve fully embraced your vulnerability, that’s when you also have great courage. And, in fact, through this courage you inspire people and you become, in one way or another, a hero. Every day, we learn the power of courage…”

*** Special thanks to Manfred F.R. Kets de Vries for his insightful studies.

Burn In, Burn On, Burn Out!

Although the concept of occupational burnout originated in the 1970s, it was only in 2019 the World Health Organization finally included burnout in its International Classification of Diseases, describing it as “a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.” This definition acknowledged that burnout is more than just an employee problem; it’s an organizational problem that requires an organizational solution.

Unfortunately, the majority of corporations has put the burden of solving the problem on the shoulders of individual employees. There is a desperately need of upstream interventions, and I feel this need every time one of my connections from the corporate world shares his / her feelings in / outside the coaching and mentoring sessions.

Malaise, burnout, depression, stress — all of these were here before COVID-19, but now they are getting worse.

By April 2020 places of employment for 81% of the global workforce were fully or partially closed and a huge mass of employees began doing their tasks from home. This unexpected, unplanned experiment made the burnout much, much worse.

The feeling of constantly being “on” made people feel exhausted, both physically and emotionally. The current crisis contributes to burnout in ways that just working from home during a normal time wouldn’t. Most of us are trying to do everything—work, exercise, relax, socialize—in a space we didn’t previously use for all these things.

Yesterday, one of my recent connections was telling me: „The lobby of our small apartment became, since March 2020, the place of networking with my two teenagers kids and my husband during our breaks… My kids are attending the online classes from their bedroom, my husband and I are sharing the kitchen and living room for work…”

Some weeks ago, a mentee was telling me that she begun to have dreams about work at night…

Margaret Wehrenberg, an expert on anxiety and the author of the book “Pandemic Anxiety: Fear, Stress, and Loss in Traumatic Times” said:

“When people are under a long period of chronic, unpredictable stress, they develop behavioral anhedonia, meaning the loss of the ability to take pleasure in their activities.

Natasha Rajah, a professor of psychiatry at McGill University said the longevity of the pandemic had contributed to a sense that time was moving differently:

“There’s definitely a change in how people are reporting memories and cognitive experiences. They have fewer rich details about their personal memories, and more negative content to their memories. People may be having a harder time forming working memories and paying attention, with “a reduced ability to hold things in their minds, manipulate thoughts and plan for the future.”

Teaming up with several professionals, Jennifer Moss – journalist, author, speaker and workplace expert, created a survey that analyzes the state of burnout and well-being during Covid-19. With support from Harvard Business Review, they gathered feedback from more than 1,500 respondents in 46 countries, in various sectors, roles, and seniority levels, last autumn.

The statistics spoke by themselves showing that burnout is a GLOBAL PROBLEM:

  • 89% of respondents said their work life was getting worse.
  • 85% said their well-being had declined.
  • 56% said their job demands had increased.
  • 62% of the people who were struggling to manage their workloads had experienced burnout “often” or “extremely often” in the previous three months.
  • 55% of all respondents didn’t feel that they had been able to balance their home and work life.
  • 25% felt unable to maintain a strong connection with family, 39% with colleagues, and 50% with friends.
  • Only 21% rated their well-being as “good,” and around 2% rated it as “excellent.”

The same study shows that millennials have the highest levels of burnout, mainly due to having less autonomy at work, lower seniority, and greater financial stressors and feelings of loneliness.

How did we get here?

Jennifer Moss is mentioning some of the major causes in her book „The Burnout Epidemic”, published by Harvard Business Press this January.

Overwork was the most-cited reason for burnout and decreased well-being. A research from Gallup (from March 2020) has shown that the risk of occupational burnout increases significantly when an employee’s workweek averages more than 50 hours, and rises even more substantially at 60 hours.

Some organizations saw the value of allowing employees more flexibility, but too many did not! Childcare options were limited, with day care centers and schools closed and grandparents separated from their extended families.

Allowing more meetings and unhealthful levels of screen time.

According to Steven Rogelberg of UNC Charlotte, who wrote The Surprising Science of Meetings, pre-Covid-19 studies showed that about 55 million meetings a day were held in the United States alone and that U.S. organizations wasted $37 billion annually because most meetings were unproductive.

Now, we are also suffering of Zoom burnout…It is a fact that video calls are actually harder on us physically and mentally because our brains find it more challenging to process nonverbals like facial expressions and body language.

The pandemic was simply an accelerant for the extreme burnout levels we are experiencing today. In the first weeks of the pandemic, most of us were expecting it to end within a month or two. And, here we are, after almost 14 months, in the middle of what a Burnout Pandemic… If we do not take structured, solid actions NOW, we will face a total nightmare!

About actions, burnout stages, I intend to write in a follow-up article.

By that time, I leave you with some signs based on which you can recognize the Work-From-Home Burnout and act before it is too late:

  • Going through mood changes like irritability, sadness, or anger
  • Experiencing symptoms of depression, like hopelessness, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, or fatigue
  • Feeling discouraged or apathetic about work
  • Getting poor sleep, experiencing insomnia, or having trouble falling asleep
  • Losing track of tasks
  • Not completing work on time
  • Drinking more alcohol than normal, or drinking to cope
  • Experiencing physical symptoms like chest pain, headaches, increased illness, heart palpitations, dizziness or fainting, or gastrointestinal pain.

Puterea din Albastru

“What sets you apart can sometimes feel like a burden and it’s not. And a lot of the time, it’s what makes you great.” —Emma Stone

*** Dacă veți dori să-i sprijiniți, aici o puteți face: Eu intenționez să-i vizitez dacă mi se va permite.

De aproape 15 ani spunem, prin haine, povesti pentru cei care cred in lumea magica a ingerilor, in minuni si in miracole, in fapte bune si in gandire pozitiva, simplitate, feminitate, elegantă nonsalantă .

Intelepctiune, maturitate, experienta, familia.

7. O dorinta sau un vis pentru 2021?

Sa fim buni, sa ajutam, sa credem, sa visam, sa zambim 😊

Sa inteleg cum functioneaza lucrurile, in tari considerate avansate, gen Marea Britanie.

Fiecare incercare a avut rolul ei, atat pe plan personal cat si in afaceri.

Sa fie in permanenta creativi!

Spune povesti cu atitudine, iubeste cafeaua, are stil, curaj si …

Iubesc insa sa merg in Italia, Franta si Grecia pentru vacante. Acum daca ma intrebi as pleca sa vizitez Iordania si Iran si apoi m-as opri in Maildive pentru relaxare. Imi place sa visez!
